5 Creative Ways To Baby Proof Your Home

Congrats, the baby is coming soon and now you need to get the house prepared for your newest member of the family. But what does keeping your baby safe in the home actually look like? Well we have a few things you can do to get your house ready and safe for your child.

This is just a small list of some of the things you can do to protect your infant and if you need us to install anything on this list, just give Hank’s Handyman a call.

Let’s get rolling…

1. Childproof your cabinets and drawers

Your kitchen cabinets and drawers are full of useful items, but they also contain many things that can hurt your infant. Knives, pizza cutters and other sharp objects can lay scattered through several different drawers.

The cabinets can also contain harmful cleaners and chemicals as well. To keep these items secure, we highly suggest installing latch locks for your cabinet doors and kitchen drawers. These come in many different types but can easily be found at any hardware store or even online at Amazon.

2. Anchor TV to wall and hide cables.

One thing you may not realize about your Flat Tv is that you can set it up on an entertainment center and hang it on the wall as well. If you go the wall hanging route you need to make sure that it is hung properly by a professional. If you mount it incorrectly, your infant could crawl by the wires and tug them until it comes crashing down.

This is not really a concern when the baby first get into your home, but as soon as that little one starts crawling around, everything is going to be checked out by them.

Not only should you properly secure the tv to your wall, you need to hide the cables so they are more out of sight. Hiding the wires with some sort of cover will keep your little one from pulling

3. Install Electric outlet safety covers

This one is probably the most common way to start baby-proofing your home. Installing electrical outlet safety covers is a cheap and fast way to keep your child from sticking their tiny fingers and other objects into the outlet.

These are very cheap and can be found at just about any retail store that carries baby items. There are several types to choose from but we find that the basic pop-in covers will do the job just fine.

Use these type of covers to keep the outlets from being tampered with.

4. Secure tall shelves to the wall

We all love our tall bookshelves but these things that hold your cool stuff can be one of the most dangerous pieces of furniture to have in your home. a small infant can easily tug one them and have the whole thing come crashing down on top of them.

There are many ways to secure your bookshelf to a wall but the best way is to use an “L” bracket. Just screw one part of the bracket to the top of your bookcase and the other side of it to the wall. This should keep it from being easily pulled over.

If you need help installing your brackets, Hank’s is here to help you out!

5. Use gates on stairs, top and bottom

Last but not least. If you have stairs in your home then you probably already know that it’s a dangerous things for your baby to be around. Accidents happen and your little person could easily fall down them and get hurt.

The fastest way to make sure this does not happen is to install a gate at. You need one installed at the top and also a gate at the bottom to keep them from crawling up. There are many to choose from so just select the one that works best for your stairwell.

Ready to get started?

In conclusion, taking some of the steps to secure your home and make it more baby proof will go a long way to keeping your child safe.
